Wisconsin's Homeless: Meet Your Unhoused Neighbors through the Eyes of UW-Madison Students
January - May 2020

State Street, situated between the University of Wisconsin campus and the state’s capitol building, receives its fair share of foot traffic and excitement. During the summer, the street is home to the smell of sizzling brats and the sound of laughter drifting from beer gardens. In the winter, you are more likely to find a bundled up college student hurrying home as another inch of snow layers the city.
However, something on State Street that has remained throughout the seasons and years is Madison’s homeless community.
After arriving on campus, I noticed Madison’s homeless population immediately. The UW-Madison students and the city’s unhoused individuals occupy many of the same spaces; State Street, surrounding area of the Capitol, Memorial Union. I became curious about other ways in which these two communities interact. Thus began this project.
